Mar 16th
I mounted one holoprojector (backside). Took epoxy 24 hours to completely dry. Very strong stuff (says up to 1 ton--I think it will hold) (30 minutes)
Mar 15th
Drilled holes through the holoprojectors and dome for the wiring to light up the holoprojectors> (60 minutes)
Also brought R2's dome to work. Coworkers loved it. They can't wait until the project is completed. I will bring him when when he has his legs and motor controls added
Mar 14th
Sanded the holoprojectors to make the inside smooth to accomodate "lenses" (60 minutes)
Mar 13th
Glued all the perimeter panels on the dome to the backplates that I made out of rubber. Beginning to look like R2 :-) (120 minutes)
Mar 11th
Painted the all the dome pieces and the shoulders and the silver/aluminum body parts (except the coin return). (60 minutes)
Mar 10th
Started cutting out the dome pieces (pie section). (120 minutes)
Mar 9th
Continued with cutting out the dome pieces (perimeter). (120 minutes)
Mar 8th
Started cutting out the dome pieces (perimeter). (120 minutes)
Mar 6th, 2001
Finished most of the panels and doors. About 85% done with the body. The whole thing will be painted once I get all the panels together. (180 minutes)
Mar 5th, 2001
Had other plans so not much accomplished. Emailed Gregg (droidboy) to order other parts. Can't wait until payday to send off the money order for more goodies. (0 minutes)
Mar 4th, 2001
Glued most "doors" and panels to the cardboard pieces. Held them in place with binder clamps while they dried. Also, glued back skin onto body (180 minutes)
Mar 3rd, 2001
Painted the body white and continued to trim the doors. After paint dried, I glued the front skin onto the body (180 minutes)
Mar 2nd, 2001
Continued to trim doors and panels. (120 minutes)
Mar 1st, 2001
Trimmed doors and panels. (120 minutes)
Feb 28th, 2001
I had to re-accomplish gluing the dome frame to the dome. It flowed onto the body and both dome frame and body frame were stuck together. I should have some pictures later. Tomorrow, I will glue the whole thing (right now, it is "tacked" in place in three spots). I also painted the dome pieces (perimeter). I have to get replacement parts for the pie sections. (90 minutes)
Feb 27th, 2001
I connected the frame to the body and mounted the lazy-susan to the top of the frame--took awhile to get it centered and find the right bolts and nuts to use (30 minutes)
I also attempted to glue the wood dome frame to the system. (15 minutes)
I sanded the dome cutout pieces to smooth them out and to hold a coat of paint (120 minutes)
I painted the first coat on the blue dome pieces (15 minutes)
I also started cutting out the body skins (120 minutes)
Feb 25th, 2001
Dad cut out the pieces for me. He also made the computer arm for me. Looks good. Need to paint it to look like aluminum.
Feb 23rd, 2001
I marked the wood for the body frame and dome frame. My dad will cut it out this weekend. (15 minutes)
Feb 22nd, 2001
I marked the perimeter of the dome. (60 minutes)
Feb 21st, 2001
The pie sections are cut out. I still have yet to sand them. Tomorrow, I will either mark the perimeter of the dome and the eyepiece or I may cut out the skins and complete the tube. That should be a one night project.
Feb 20th, 2001
I continued to work on cutting out the pie sections. Taking longer than I expected. I completed 2 more and 1/2 way through the third. (150 minutes)
Feb 19th, 2001
The skins arrived (yea!) When I tacked them on the dome, looks like the perimeter is off by a few centimenters. Also, the skins are about 1/2 inch shorter than the length of the tube. I will measure it and see how much problem it would be to cut off the bottom of the tube. Might have to do some body-filling. I'll worry about that later.
Feb 18th, 2001
I started cutting the dome. I have 3 pie sections cut out and 3 left to go. I still have 3 left (in addition to all the areas around the perimeter of the dome. Looks like quite a bit of work. (180 minutes)
Feb 17th, 2001
I finished polishing the dome with steel wool (Extra Fine and Super Fine). It looks great. However, I can see finger prints (took some buffing to get rid of them). I will have to find a way to prevent fingerprints from being on the dome. I will continue to use gloves until I put a final protective coat on it. (30 minutes)
Feb 16th, 2001
Wow, working on the body took longer than expected. I had to cut the tube twice to get the diameter I wanted. I would guess that the final cut was 3.5 cm when I was finished. The entire tube cutting process took 2 hockey periods to work on. The Red Wings won that game :) Also, I received Christina and Martin's book today. Some good ideas in it but it probably will be awhile before I get to that aspect of R2. (120 minutes)
Feb 15th, 2001
I continued to work on the dome. I wet sanded using 400 for 30 minutes and then 600 for 30 minutes. Then, I used fine steel wool to bring out the shine. Started giving some dark areas. I believe it may be because it wasn't completely dry. I will work more tomorrow to see if the dark areas reappear (90 minutes)
Feb 14th, 2001
The rest of the parts I ordered arrived (minus the skins). I will start working on the body after I get the majority of the dome done.
Feb 13th, 2001
I started sanding the dome with 220 grit sandpaper. I still have a long ways to go. (30 minutes)
Feb 11th, 2001
I received the dome.
